Dry Rot is a type of fungi timber decay known as Serpula Lacrymans. It occurs when wood becomes too wet with a moisture content of 20% or more and the wood destroying via fungus attacks to the timber. Dry Rot is the most serious form of fungal decay, if not diagnosed at an early stage, it can potentially damage the structural integrity.
Wet Rot occurs when excess moisture is present in timber over long periods of time. This type of decay affects wet timber by causing it to soften. Wet rot is caused by moisture being absorbed into the timber.
You may not even be aware that you have a woodworm problem until the damage has been done. Left untreated woodworm will continue to feed on the timber resulting ultimately in the structural failure of the timbers.
A timber survey usually involves intrusive investigations in order to ascertain the extent of the damage and provide a viable and accurate resolution.
